Aims

The YGG aims to provide a forum for networking, support and guidance for early career (post–graduation to chartered) Geoscientists in a sociable and friendly environment. YGG is open to everyone employed in all fields of Geology and Earth Science from postgraduate studies and research, to industry, consultancy and teaching.

Our meetings cover:
  • General interest talks
  • Meetings where the members themselves give short (10 – 15 mins) presentations on their work, research or interest area.
  • Chartership ‘workshops’
  • More relaxed social/networking meetings, to increase contact and support between members.
Meetings are based at Birmingham and Leicester Universities in 2009, on a roughly bi-monthly basis. Topics so far have included:
  • ‘CGeol – how, what & when?
  • ‘Remediation of a Former Gasworks Site in the Trent Valley’
  • ‘Digital mineral mapping, Using GIS to define mineral resources’
  • ‘From Mashing Mud to Capturing Carbon’
  • ‘The Importance of a Good Geo-environmental Desk Study’
  • ‘The Infilling of a Cave Fissure in Nottingham City Centre’
Initially based in the Midlands region, we started in 2008 with the help of the Geological Society and the Regional Groups in the area. We are hoping to roll out similar initiatives to the other regions beginning this year with South Wales. If you’d like help in setting up something similar in your region, please contact the group secretary.
