Chartership and Professional Information

The Geological Society of London is the recognised UK professional body for geoscientists. If you are a Fellow of the Society you can apply to have your training and experience validated so that you can use the title Chartered Geologist (and the postnominal CGeol) as a mark of professionalism.

The Society is one of the bodies licensed by the Science Council to award the prestigious title of Chartered Scientist. It brings the postnominal CSci and is perhaps of most interest to those Fellows who do not feel that Chartered Geologist is the most appropriate title for them.

The Geological Society is also licensed by the European Federation of Geologists to consider and approve applications for the EurGeol title in the UK.

New Chartership System from 1 January 2010

Following Council’s decision to review and update the Chartership application process, the Professional Committee of the Society has introduced a more transparent and robust system, which increases accountability to Fellowship and strengthens the status of Chartered Geologists and Chartered Scientists.

A brief outline of the main changes to the process are given below, with full details on the Apply for CGeol and Apply for CSci pages of the website.

All candidates will be interviewed at specific locations on certain dates within the year. Applicants will in future state when they apply which of the pre-set interview locations and dates they would like to attend. Synchronous applications for FGS and Chartership will no longer be permitted – applicants must in future already have been elected as a Fellow for at least three months at the time of their application.

Candidates will define the area of expertise within which they practice from a given list of sectors within the geoscience profession

Applications will be scrutinised by individuals selected from a pool of Validated Scrutineers (Fellows who are experienced CCeols/CScis) with at least one Scrutineer having an area of expertise that matches that claimed by the applicant

Chartered Scientists

The processes defined for Chartered Geologists will continue to be the same for Chartered Scientists.

Overseas Applicants

For applicants based in Hong Kong arrangements will be made to hold an equivalent form of Interview Day, which a Scrutineer with recent UK experience will attend in order to ensure moderation between the Hong Kong and UK panels.

All other overseas applicants will continue, where ever possible, to have their Professional Interview carried out by two Validated Scrutineers in the country in which they are currently residing.

Full information on the new application process, including all relevant application forms and guidance documents can be found by clicking on the Apply for CGeol or Apply for CSci links in the navigation menu.
