Elections to Council 2010-11
The October issue of Geoscientist invited Fellows to nominate new members of Council.
There are five vacancies on Council for which eleven nominations have been received. A preliminary ballot will be conducted, the results of which will determine the list for the formal vote at the Annual General Meeting to be held on 2 June 2010.
Iain Bartholomew, Vice President and chair of the Development & Fundraising Committee, is retiring from Council. Subject to his being elected by the Fellows, Council proposes that Colin Summerhayes should succeed Iain in those roles.
Edward Derbyshire, Secretary, Foreign & External Affairs, chairs the External Relations Committee in that role and is retiring from Council. Council proposes that Alan Lord, an existing member of Council who also sits on that committee, be elected to the office of Secretary, Foreign & External Affairs at the Annual General Meeting.
In order to effect a smooth transition in the office of Treasurer, Council has extended the term of office of Adam Law to four years and proposes that he should go forward for election to that role at the Annual General Meeting in 2011 on the retirement of Andy Fleet.
Fellows are encouraged to vote online by going to www.geolsoc.org.uk/vote2010 to register their vote. Please follow the instructions on the screen.
A postal ballot paper was enclosed with the February issue of Geoscientist for those unable to vote online. Fellows should enter a mark against the name of each candidate they are voting for to serve as ordinary members of Council (up to five). Papers with marks against more than five names will be invalid. The ballot paper should be placed in the envelope provided (marked “Ballot Paper Only”), which should be sealed and returned to Burlington House. The envelope must bear the name of the Fellow written legibly on the back and must reach the Society not later than 31 March 2010. Envelopes without the name of the Fellow will not be opened and the vote will be invalid. No other communication of any kind should be included in the envelope.
NOTE: Fellows may only vote once, either by electronically online or by returning the postal ballot.
